On June 16, 2026, the Royal Canadian Navy marked an important moment of continuity, service, and leadership as Vice-Admiral Dan Charlebois assumed command as the 39th Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy. The formal Change of Command ceremony took place at His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Star in Hamilton, Ontario, with General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff, presiding.

Vice-Admiral Charlebois brings more than 34 years of service to the role, with a career that has reflected deep commitment to sailors, operational readiness, and the future of Canada’s fleet.

The ceremony also provided an opportunity to recognize and thank Vice-Admiral Angus Topshee RMC 1994 for his leadership over the past four years as Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy. His tenure was marked by a strong focus on sailors, readiness, modernization, and the people who serve across the Navy team. As he moves into his new role as Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff, he carries forward a legacy of service and dedication to the Canadian Armed Forces.

A Change of Command is more than a ceremonial transfer of authority. It is a reflection of mission, continuity, trust, and shared commitment. For the Royal Canadian Navy, this transition comes at a time when Canada’s maritime forces continue to play a vital role in protecting national sovereignty, supporting secure maritime trade, and responding to challenges at home and abroad.

We extend our congratulations to Vice-Admiral Charlebois as he takes the helm, and our sincere appreciation to Vice-Admiral Topshee for his service and leadership. Fair winds and following seas to Vice-Admiral Topshee, and congratulations to Vice-Admiral Charlebois as he leads the Royal Canadian Navy into the future.
