The Week That Was…

By: WJO

We did our best to cover the many events that were carried out over the past week at both colleges. At the time of this posting, we hadn’t received everything but with the help of a whole lot of people we’ve made a pretty good stab at it.

Among the high-lights:

OCdt William Buss, a third year UTPNCM enrolled in Military and Strategic Studies, received an award as one of the top five presenters at the Conference of Defence Associations Institute (CDAI) Graduate Student Symposium for his presentation “Lifting the Shadows: Media, Political Awareness, and Public Relations as Enablers for Special Operations Forces”.

The 8th Defence and Security Economics Workshop took place at Carleton University on Friday. This workshop was co-organized by Dr. Berkok from the RMCC Department of Political Science.

The first year RMCC Commandant, attended the Air Board meetings in Ottawa and his Order of Military Merit Investiture Ceremony with the Governor General – see military college list below.

In addition, BGen Meinzinger was able to meet with various local civic and business leaders mid-week at the Imagine Kingston working breakfast, giving the opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with local leadership. He also had an office call with the Mayor of Kingston at City Hall along with the Cadet Wing Commander and CCWO in order to continue the strong relationship between the City of Kingston and RMCC.

Other notable events  in a pretty packed agenda:

As noted above, the Commandant was involved with the official opening of the OHL, Jr “A” Kingston Frontenacs game last Friday. Among the ceremonies was the placing of  a bronzed poppy which was originally used when the bodies of Canadians KIA were departing Afghanistan at Ramp Ceremonies.

We do not have all the details involving the trophy in the photo but we understand it has the names of all those Canadians killed in Afghanistan and the main parts of the trophy includes parts of IEDs, vehicles and other equipment which was used on the battle-fields during the war.

From what we have also learned is that type of  ceremony has been and will continue to be held in the hometown of our fallen heroes all across Canada.

Placing the poppy on the photo above is Lucas Dawe, son of 22596 Matthew Dawe who was KIA 4 July 2007.
