OUA MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK (24 – 30 Jan) : Landon Lavictoire, Royal Military College Paladins, Hockey
RMC hockey player Landon Lavictoire enjoyed a memorable weekend in what has been a difficult season for the RMC men’s hockey team. On Saturday evening, the forward from of Kirkland Lake, Ont. scored the overtime winner in a 3-2 victory over the visiting Ryerson Rams. Lavictoire followed that up with his second consecutive game-winning goal, along with two assists, in a 4-3 win against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday afternoon. The goal against Toronto came with just over five minutes left to play in regulation time. Lavictoire, in his third season with the Paladins, has 27 points (9 goals, 18 assists) in 25 games this season.

Carr-Harris Cup (Pre- Game write-up)

The Carr-Harris Cup game is one of the longest standing traditions of competitive hockey. The game, now sponsored by the International Hockey Hall of Fame (IHHOF), is played annually between Queens and RMC. With the absence of the WestPoint game over the past 5 years, the Carr-Harris cup has begun to fill the void.
I have been fortunate enough to play in 4 Carr-Harris cup games with this year bringing my total to 5. My first two Carr-Harris cup games will always be fond memories of mine. The first game I had the privilege to play in was held at Constantine Arena, where RMC tracksuits filled the rink to capacity. In front of the Capacity crowd we managed to win the game in a Shoot-out. In my second year, again in front of a sell out crowd at Constantine, I was awarded the game MVP trophy; unfortunately it was bitter sweet as we lost a hard fought game 4-2.
This year is also a first for almost the entire team as only 2Lt Soros (24686) and myself have had the privilege of playing the game in front of the cadets in Constantine Arena. The last two years the game has been played at the Memorial center and this year the team is overwhelmed with excitement to experience the LOUD sea of red this year.
This year the Paladins are coming into the game on a hot streak, having won both games leading up to the event. The atmosphere is electric in the dressing room as the team entered the week of practice. This historic event will provide a fast pace, hard hitting, action filled game that will entertain the cadets and all others who attend. It will no doubt be a memorable night for all those who are involved. It’s time the Carr-Harris cup came back to this side of the causeway.

POST-Game….. from RMC Team Captain – Richard Lim –
The CarrHarris Cup lived up to its usual hype. Cadets from RMC wearing scarlets filled the arena, leaving very little standing room in the rink. The game was fast passed and rough.
The officiating did not let much slide causing the game to have very little flow. After going into the third period with a lead the Paladins ran into special team problems, giving up two powerplay goals and a shorthanded goal. Trading powerplays in the third period did not play into the Paladins hands as they played short manned which has begun to wear on the players, who have been short manned all semester due to injuries.
The Paladins and Gaels put on a great show in front of the capacity crowd and were privileged to take part of the 25th annual game and look forward to the continued support from the community in coming seasons.

OUA Women’s Fencing Championship
First Day Results By David Howes
Nicky Sapera (4th year) won the silver medal in women’s foil, losing only to a Carleton fencer who is on the national team. Teammates Chantal Boucher, Sharon Ong and rookie Daniela Moyano finished 8th, 9th and 17th respectively.
In women’s sabre 4th years Isabelle Labonte and Sonja Maul-Wilson finished 6th and 8th respectively while 3rd years Vianca Libongco and Jackie Ruis ended up 10th and 19th.
In women’s epee 2nd year Erica-Lynn Young finished 8th while rookie Diane Malo ended up 10th. 2nd year Laura Smith was 12th and rookie Rikki Bell ended up 19th.
Overall our very young team performed as expected. Tomorrow all three teams will be trying for medals in the team events.
Day Two… By David Howes
RMC finished the 2011 OUA Women’s Fencing Championships on a positive note today with 3 teams taking medals in the team events. Leading the way was our least experienced team, women’s epee, who fought hard to win the silver after fencing a very smart tactical final match. The team comprised of 2nd years Laura Smith and Erica-Lynn Young and rookies Diane Malo and Rikki Bell surprised many teams including U of T and Queen’s enroute to their final match against defending champions Carleton. The foil and sabre teams also enjoyed a successful day winning bronze medals.
The foil team of Nicky Sapera, Sharon Ong, Chantal Boucher and Daniela Moyano were defeated until their semi final match against the defending champions and eventual gold medalist Carleton. They then went on to a convincing victory against Queens to take the bronze.
The sabre team of Sonja Maul-Wilson, Isabelle Labonte, Vianca Libongco and Jackie Ruis recovered from a first round loss to Queens to eventually take the bronze with their victory against Carleton. Overall the women finished 3rd in the race for the OUA Championships banner behind defending champions Carleton and this years champions U of T.
Individually, in addition to her bronze medal in individual foil, Nicky Sapera was named an OUA all-star along with teammate Chantal Boucher and sabre fencer Sonja Maul-Wilson.
One more thing to note. We were the only school to medal in all 3 team events! More
