86th edition of the Challenge Cup – Saturday 1 February 2025
For the first time since 2020, the longest standing international ice hockey rivalry returned to Kingston Saturday afternoon as the Army West Point Black Knights made the trip across the boarder to battle the RMC Paladins. The two teams delighted the 2,100 plus fans to a tremendous game, with Army ultimately winning their second consecutive Challenge Cup, 3-2.
For the Paladins, who dropped a one-goal decision in conference play the night before against the Guelph Gryphons, a slow start would prove costly. Just over a minute into the contest, Army would open the scoring. Taking advantage of power-play opportunity roughly 10 minutes later, the Black Knights would strike again to go up 2-0.
Stuck by two entering the second, the deficit got slightly larger for RMC, before they were able to go momentum going their way. Another powerplay goal for Army just over three minutes into the frame would extend the visitors advantage to three. However, from that point on, the Paladins were able to gain some control. Nearing the midway point of the period, Paladins forward Brent Broaders was able to jump on a loose puck on top of the Army crease and slam it home to put RMC on the board. Then, just over three minutes later, senior defenceman Mathieu Hébert chased down the puck as it rolled towards the Army net and confidently fired it over the shoulder of Black Knight’s goalie, Evan Szary. All of sudden, trailing by just one, the crowd erupted inside Slush Puppie Place. As the second period ended, the score remained 3-2.
Looking for the equalizer, RMC came out strong in the third. Generating chances, the Paladins showed plenty of belief. Through the first half of the period, RMC was unable to find the tying goal. In net for RMC, Michael Davis, also made multiple critical saves for the Paladins to keep the contest a one-goal game. With time winding down, the Paladins continued to push but were not rewarded for their efforts as the buzzer sounded.
In the loss, Davis would go on to make 45 saves for RMC.
With the win, Army has now won two consecutive Challenge Cup’s. The game also marked the final Challenge Cup for Army head coach Brian Riley, who has announced his retirement at the end of the Black Knight’s season.

Pour la première fois depuis 2020, le match annuel de la plus longue rivalité internationale du hockey sur glace était de retour à Kingston samedi après-midi, alors que les Black Knights d’Army West Point ont traversé la frontière pour affronter les Paladins du CMR. Les deux équipes ont ravi plus de 2100 spectateurs en leur offrant un magnifique spectacle et au final, les représentants de l’United States Military Academy (USMA) ont remporté leur deuxième match consécutif de la Challenge Cup par la marque de 3-2.
Pour les Paladins, qui ont perdu un match par un but la veille contre les Gryphons de Guelph dans le cadre de leur saison régulière des SUO, un lent début de match samedi a été très coûteux. Après une minute de jeu dans la rencontre, Army a ouvert la marque. Profitant d’une situation d’avantage numérique une dizaine de minutes plus tard, les Black Knights ont doublé leur avance avec leur deuxième but du match.
En retard par deux buts au début de la deuxième période, le déficit s’est accru davantage avant que l’attaque du CMR se mette en marche. Un autre but en avantage numérique d’Army après trois minutes de jeu dans la période médiane a prolongé l’avance des visiteurs à trois buts. À partir de ce moment cependant, les Paladins ont retrouvé leurs repères. Vers la mi-chemin dans la période, l’attaquant Brent Broaders a sauté sur une rondelle libre dans le haut de l’enclave pour marquer le premier but du CMR. Un peu plus de trois minutes plus tard, le défenseur finissant Mathieu Hébert a poursuivi la rondelle qui filait vers le but d’Army et il a tiré avec confiance au-dessus de l’épaule du gardien Evan Szary des Black Knights. Soudainement, la foule de la Place Slush Puppie a explosé de joie alors que l’écart était réduit à un seul but. C’était 3-2 pour les visiteurs après deux périodes de jeu.
Les Paladins sont sortis avec aplomb en troisième période, générant des occasions et démontrant beaucoup de conviction sur la glace. Le CMR n’a pas été en mesure d’égaliser la marque en première moitié de période. Devant le filet des Paladins, Michael Davis a aussi réalisé de gros arrêts pour garder son équipe dans le match avec un écart d’un seul but. Alors que le temps s’écoulait, les Paladins ont continué de pousser, mais en vain, alors que le dernier coup de sifflet s’est fait entendre.
Dans la défaite, Davis a réalisé 45 arrêts pour le CMR.
Army remporte ainsi un deuxième match consécutif de la Challenge Cup. Ce match était aussi la dernière participation à la Challenge Cup pour l’entraîneur-chef Brian Riley d’Army, qui a annoncé qu’il prenait sa retraite à la fin de la saison des Black Knights.
Paladins Fall to Gaels in 37th Carr-Harris Cup
The Carr-Harris Cup will remain with the Queen’s Gaels for at least one more year, after the RMC Paladins were defeated Thursday evening by their cross-town rivals at Slush Puppie Place. Playing in their second consecutive game at Slush Puppie Place following Saturday’s contest against Army West Point, RMC was unable to make up an early deficit, falling 5-2.
Playing with plenty of energy and tempo to start the game, the Paladins were able to take majority of the early play to the No. 7 ranked team in the country. However, despite registering six of the first eight shots, the Paladins were unable to find the back of the net. Instead, it would be the Gaels who quickly made their presence felt midway through the frame. Scoring two goals just a minute and 13 seconds apart, Queen’s swiftly turned a scoreless game into a 2-0 advantage.
The Gaels would carry that lead into what would be a very busy second period. Doubling their lead, the Gaels would score two more goals to go up 4-0. However, the Paladins were then able to break through. On a power-play with a little under four minutes to go in the period, Isaac Pascoal walked in from a sharp-angle and fired home his third goal of the season. After Queen’s had restored the four-goal lead, RMC would strike once more in the dying second as Nathan Fox coasted in and fifth goal of the campaign on a two-on-one.
Throughout the third period, RMC did their best to get back into the game. However, they were unable to draw any closer.
To go along with their goals, Pascoal and Fox each recorded an assist as well. Bruce Coltart also got his name on the stat sheet registering an assist. Michael Davis made 31 saves in goal for the Paladins.

À leur deuxième match de suite sur cette patinoire après leur match de saison contre Army West Point, le CMR n’a pas été en mesure de renverser un retard de début de rencontre, pour perdre 5 à 2.
Jouant avec plein d’énergie et de rythme pour démarrer ce match, les Paladins ont su tenir tête à la septième équipe au classement national. Cependant, malgré qu’ils aient dirigé six des huit premiers tirs au but sur le filet des Gaels, les Paladins n’ont pas été en mesure d’ouvrir la marque. Ce sont plutôt les représentants de Queen’s qui ont été les premiers à trouver le fond du filet, deux fois de surcroît en très peu de temps à mi-chemin dans la période. Marquant deux fois à 1:13 minute d’écart, Queen’s a rapidement transformé un match sans but pour prendre les devants 2-0.
Les Gaels détenaient toujours cette avance au début d’une deuxième période fort affairée. Doublant leur avance, les Gaels ont ajouté deux autres buts pour mener 4-0. Cependant, les Paladins ont été en mesure de s’inscrire à la marque. En avantage numérique avec un peu moins de quatre minutes à faire au deuxième vingt, Isaac Pascoal est entré dans un angle serré et a fait mouche pour marquer son troisième but de la saison. Après que Queen’s ait rétabli une avance de quatre buts, le CMR a marqué un autre but dans les derniers instants de l’engagement alors que Nathan Fox s’est amené au filet pour marquer son cinquième but de la saison sur une montée à deux contre un.
Tout au long de la troisième période, le CMR a fait de son mieux pour revenir dans le match. Cependant, ils n’ont pas été en mesure de s’approcher davantage.
En plus de leur but, Pascoal et Fox ont chacun amassé une passe. Bruce Coltart a aussi obtenu une mention d’aide dans ce match, puis Michael Davis a réalisé 31 arrêts devant le filet des Paladins.
Historic Hockey Tournament
The Royal Military College Varisty Men’s Hockey Team, The 2 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Hockey Team, and The Queens Gaels University Hockey Team, come together at The Slush Puppy Place Arena in Kingston, Ontario, for a Historic Hockey Tournament on February 8th, 2025.

L’équipe masculine de hockey du Collège militaire royal Varisty, l’équipe de hockey du 2 Royal Canadian Horse Artillery et l’équipe de hockey de l’université Queens Gaels se réunissent à l’aréna Slush Puppy Place à Kingston, en Ontario, pour un tournoi de hockey historique, le 8 février 2025.
On Friday 7 February two former RMC Hockey Alumni suited up with the Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni in Trenton, On in a game against a team made up of players from the Men’s, Women’s and Oldtimers Teams from CFB Trenton.
RJ Ellis (RMC 1993/94 – 1996/97) and Owen Gill (RMC 2015-16 – 2018/19) donned the Blue and White alongside several former Maple Leafs such as Darcy Tucker, Brad May, Rick Vaive, Gary Leeman, Rick Nattress, Matt Martin, Dan Daoust and others.
Ellis and Gill share a couple of other things in common in addition to being RMC Hockey Alumni, both wore #10 in their playing days at RMC and both of their fathers played for the Maple Leafs.
RJ’s dad, Ron Ellis, played for the Maple Leafs from 1964/65 – 1974/75 and 1977/78 – 1980/81. While with the Leafs Ron was a member of the 1976 Stanley Cup Champions and a key member of the 1972 Team Canada, in the Summit Series where he played all 8 games. Ellis received a rare tribute in 1968 when Leafs legend Ace Bailey asked the club to bring his No. 6 out of retirement so Ellis could wear it. Ellis, who was wearing No. 8 at the time, wore Bailey’s number for the final 11 seasons of his career. Number 6 was re-retired in 1981 after Ron’s retirement and RJ got to wear the number 6 in Friday’s game.
Owen’s dad played for the Maple Leafs from 1984/85 – 1995/96. After the 95/96 season Todd continued to play in the NHL with stints in San Jose (where he wore the “C”), St Louis, Detrot, Phoenix, Colorado and Chicago, finally retiring after the 2002/03 season. After his playing career Todd moved into the coaching ranks where he coached the Brockville Braves (CJHL), Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), Owen Sound Attack (OHL) and the Adirondack Flames and Stockton Heat (AHL).
