First Skylark for the new school year!
RMC cadets, students and staff were in mild shock last week when they were in the vicinity of “Brucie”. It turns out that the 32 year old statue was decked-out in traditional aboriginal dress.
Commandant, BGen Tom Lawson (a die-hard Toronto Maple Leaf fan) commenting on the latest “Brucie” garb …”it is certainly an improvement over the Montreal Canadien jersey he was wearing during the Stanley Cup play-offs in the Spring.”
Although the originators of this skylark were not immediately identified, it is believed that students from the Aboriginal Leadership Opportunity Year (ALOY) were behind it.

Symon Podilchak – URSI Young Scientist Award/Prix du jeune scientifique
Symon Podilchak received the Young Scientist Award at the 29th General Assembly of L’Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (International Union of Radio Science, URSI ) in Chicago in August.
Symon completed his master’s with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at RMC, and received the award for his paper, “Full Characterization of Directive and Non-Directive Surface-Wave Launchers and Application to Surface-Wave and Leaky-Wave Beam Scanning Antennas.” He is now completing his PhD at Queen’s University under the same supervisors.
The Young Scientist Awards are presented at the General Assemblies of URSI to recognize an international group of individuals who have made innovative contributions and discoveries in multidiscipline research related to electromagnetic fields and waves.
The General Assemblies of URSI are held every three years to review current research trends, present new discoveries and make plans for future research and special projects in all areas of radio science, especially where international cooperation is desirable.

Symon a completé sa maîtrise au département de génie électrique et de génie informatique au CMR, et a reçu le prix pour son article intitulé: “Full Characterization of Directive and Non-Directive Surface-Wave Launchers and Application to Surface-Wave and Leaky-Wave Beam Scanning Antennas.” Il complète présentement son doctorat à Queen’s University.
Les prix du jeune scientifique sont présentés à l’ Assemblée Générale de L’URSI pour reconnaître un group international d’individuels qui ont fait des contributions innovatrices et ont fait des découvertes en recherches multidisciplinaires en relation avec des champs électromagnétiques et ondes.
L’Assemblée Générale de L’URSI a lieu chaque trois ans pour réviser les modes de recherches courantes, présenter des nouvelles découvertes et créer des plans pour la recherche future et des projets spéciaux dans tous les domaines de la science radio, particulièrement où la coopération internationale est désirée.

The Way I Remember It

“Wing Harrier Run – Fun Again!” – The wing harrier run; this was an event that in my first year at the college (2005) was a great morale booster for the wing. The cadets could dress up in “colourful & wacky”outfits that sported their squadron colours and would race against each other in support of their squadron. In my 2, and 3 year however the event changed and became squadrons running as groups rather than as individuals and the costumes were removed. This year however the race is back to its old format, with some great new additions. The cadets were given electronic ankle bracelets to mark their times and were allowed to return to wearing costumes to support the squadrons. Also the race was moved from its usual spot in October to the cadet sports day this past Saturday. Spirits were high this past Saturday morning as the cadets took this race format and ran with it (no pun intended). It was something that I am proud to say was even better than I remembered it to be in 1st year.
The rest of the sports day was equally as good. It closely resembled the one I had in first year. The events (Tug of war, Relay race, Football, and a Maze game) were extremely competitive as no squadron wanted to give points to any of the others. The day also saw the rejuvenation of high levels of squadron cohesiveness, demonstrated especially by the 7 Squadron colour guard and pipers. The traditional closing ceremonies and BBQ provided an excellent end to the busy day.
In short, this week I did not have to “remember when” because what I remembered was on display in front of me. The squadron pride, the tough fights in sporting events, and the good times as a wing were all to be found on the peninsula this weekend.

Rugby team win big on the road!
How sweet it is! RMC rolled all over Trent University in the opening game of the 2008 OUA (M) Rugby League by a tune of 39 – 0 in Peterborough. Josh Whiteside led the offensive attack with three tries good for 15 points. Nichola Villa, kicked four converts; one penalty G & a drop G talleying a total of 14 points with his “toe”. Benjamin Strocel and Christopher Pratt each added a single try to account for the 39 points.
This saturday, 13 September RMC travells to St. Catherines to tangle with the defending champions from last year, Brock Badgers. Game time is 2PM at Brock University. Ex cadets, parent and friends who will be in the Garden City or in the Niagara area would be most welcome by the team to be seen in attendance.

(W) Soccer Split Their First Two Games
The lady Paladins found themselves in two 2-0 games last week. Queen’s University gaining a bit of revenge against RMC after being eliminated in a sudden death first round play-off game last FAll – won the league opener. RMC bounced right back and defeated Trent University in their second encounter by the identical 2-0 score. SAMANTHA BECKETT & SHANNON NUDDS were the goal-getters.
The RMC soccer playing ladies travel north this weekend. Saturday sees them matched against Laurentian – kick-off at 2:15. Sunday they are in North Bay competing against Nipissing. Game time is also at 2:15. RMC friends / fans from these two areas are encouraged to support the RMC team.

(M) Soccer Lose Two
RMC were on the short ends of – 4-2 and 1-0 losses in their first two OUA league games of the season. TREVOR GUILE and LANDON ZEEMAN shared goal scoring honours.
The men are also at Laurientian and Nipissing on saturday & sunday. Both of their games are slated to start at 12 noon.
