Dr. Richard Bathurst has been awarded the the highest prize for a technical paper in Civil Engineering in Canada. The Sir Casimir Gzowski Medal is awarded by the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering and is Canada’s oldest engineering award (established1890).
He was given the award because of his outstanding paper, “Calibration
concepts for load and resistance factor design (LRFD) of reinforced soil walls” by Richard J. Bathurst and his co-authors Tony M. Allen, and Andrzej S. Nowak (Volume 45, No. 10, Canadian Geotechnical Journal).
This is the second time that Dr. Bathurst has won the Gzowski Medal and he has also been the runner up for the award. Dr Bathurst has now been awarded a major national or international award every year since 2005.

7004 Mr Byron Richard “Rick” Hinton (RRMC RMC 1966) is an Adjunct Professor – Bachelor of Management at Concordia University. He holds a B.Eng. (Royal Military College) and an M.B.A. (Alberta). Rick Hinton’s topics of interest include finance (in various forms) and business strategy. His background includes consulting to small businesses in need of financial turnarounds, developing business plans, preparing offering memorandums, and raising venture capital. He also spent several years as the Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Management at the University of Lethbridge, then President of Keewatin Community College. His past research interests included entrepreneurship training for minorities. His current research, as part of his doctoral dissertation in international business, involves the i mpact of free trade and international finance on the economic health of small tax haven nations. 14426 Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Ewing, CD (RMC 1984) was appointed Regimental Secretary of the Royal Canadian Regiment. Upon graduation from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1984 with a BA in Military and Strategic Studies, he became a member of The Royal Canadian Regiment (The RCR) and was posted to the 3rd Battalion in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was posted to Land Forces Central Area Headquarters as the G3 (Operations Officer) in February 2007, a post which he has held until the present time. Lieutenant-Colonel Ewing is married and his wife Colleen and two young boys, Simon and Riley, reside in Trenton. His main hobby involves trying to spend quality time with his family. He hopes to someday finish his Masters in War Studies. Operational deployments include a tour in Cyprus in 1986 with 3RCR, a year in Croatia in 1994/95 with HQs UNPROFOR, and a tour with HQs 2 CMBG in Kabul, Afghanistan from which he returned in January 2004. Foreign postings include one year with 3RCR / 4 CMBG in Baden-Soellingen, FRG, and a three year posting as an Exchange Officer with the U.S. Army Forces Command in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Principal and Vice-Principal Research are pleased to announce the appointment of 18314 Maj Jim Denford (RMC 1992) to the position of Director of Research Administration. Major James Denford graduated from RMC with B.Eng (May 1992) and MBA (May 2002) degrees and will be shortly defending his PhD in Management at the Queen’s School of Business (April 2009). He is currently teaching courses in Management Information Systems in the Business Administration Department. His research interests include knowledge strategy, strategic alignment, and information systems leadership. Major Denford is a Signals Officer with previous experience in signals intelligence, project management, tactical and infrastructure communications and information systems, and simulation-based experimentation.

20510 David Hall (RRMC RMC 1996) was recently awarded the Meritorious Service award by The Honourable Steven Point, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia at the 2008 Police Honours Night. Dave was one of eleven RCMP and Vancouver Police Department members presented the award for their work in targeting an organized crime group, the Hells Angels, in British Columbia. Dave has been with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police since February, 2000 and is currently posted to the provincial major crimes section in British Columbia, with the Serious Crime Unit.

S148 General Richard Hillier, Former Chief of the Defence Staff for Canadian Forces is a new motivational speaker for Speakers’ Spotlight.Since becoming Canada’s top soldier in February 2005, General Rick Hillier (Retired) fought two battles, each with his trademark passion and urgency. The most outspoken Canadian military leader in a generation, he leaves a renewed military, equipped with new aircraft, vehicles and other equipment as well as real-life battle experience that has earned the notice of the world. As a tireless military advocate, he raised the profile of Canada’s military, which endeared him to his troops and gave Canada an important card to play at the NATO table.

Rev. Donald Maclean joined the Armed Forces and earned his parachuting wings in 1980. Once training was completed, the Macleans jetted to Germany for Don’s three-year army chaplain posting with an artillery regiment in Lahr. Don completed a German parachute course – during which he experienced profound gratitude for a reserve chute! By 1984, the family returned to Ontario with Don a chaplain first in Petawawa then Kingston’s Royal Military College. After a year of French-language training in Ottawa, the Macleans finally settled in the Nation’s Capital with Don as chaplain at Uplands’ Elizabeth Park Protestant Chapel. When the base closed, he pioneered the creation of the first Roman Catholic/Protestant Chapel. Don later assisted bases across Canada with similar amalgamations.By the mid-1990s, Don was command chaplain for the Canadian Army working out of National Defence headquarters, making tours to Bosnia and the Golan Heights and visiting bases. He was also projec t supervisor for the creation of a digital hymnal, an electronic music resource for use in chapels. Retiring from the Armed Forces in 1999, Don continued with interim/supply ministry in Ottawa at Rideau Park United Church, Bells Corners, Stittsville, Bell Street, Knox and a year in the Conference Office. Mohamed Bayoumi was a Faculty member in the Royal Military College Department of Electrical and Computing Engineering as well as at Queen’s University prior to his retirement. Mohamed Bayoumi was appointed a Governor of the Kingston General Hospital in 1999 and joined the Board of Directors in 2000. He has served on the former Patient Care and Service Quality, Education, and Planning and Resources Committees of the Board . He is currently a member of the Board’s Clinical and Academic and Directors’ Nominating Committees as well as serving as the Board’s representative to the KGH Foundation. Mohamed has also served as Chair of the Hospital’s Spiritual & Religious Care Advisory Committee and has served on the Bioethics Committee. He graduated from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, with his Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. Elaine Forshaw is an instructor at both the Royal Military College and Queen’s University in linguistics and English as a second language. She was appointed a Governor of Kingston General Hospital in 2001 and joined the Board in 2003. She has served on the former Planning Committee, the Planning/Resources Committee, as well as representing KGH on the Planning Committee at Providence Care. She is presently a member of the Resources Committee and Directors’ Nominating Committee. She graduated from the University of B.C. with her Bachelor of Education and she has also obtained her Masters of Arts in Linguistics from Concordia.
