From his early years growing up on the Trenton base to becoming one of Canada’s most influential air force leaders, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Al Meinzinger’s career is a remarkable story of service, leadership, and lifelong commitment to Canada’s defence and aviation community.

Born in Trenton and raised within a military family, Meinzinger was steeped from an early age in the values that define military life—duty, service, and teamwork. Those foundations shaped a career that would span nearly four decades and leave a lasting impact on the Royal Canadian Air Force, the Canadian Armed Forces, and now, Canada’s aerospace and defence industry.

A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada Class of 1989, Meinzinger joined the Canadian Forces in 1985 through the Regular Officer Training Plan, earning a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Economics and Commerce. His time at RMC set the stage for a career marked by operational excellence, strategic insight, and steady leadership.

A seasoned aviator, Meinzinger flew both the CH‑135 Twin Huey and CH‑146 Griffon helicopters and completed four flying tours during his career. His operational leadership included commanding 403 Helicopter Operational Training Squadron in 2006 and deploying to Kandahar, Afghanistan, in 2011 as Commander of Canada’s Joint Task Force Air Wing during the final phase of combat operations. In Afghanistan, he oversaw the delivery of critical air capabilities in a complex and high‑risk operational environment, underscoring his ability to lead effectively under pressure.

Menzinger’s career also reflects a deep engagement with strategic and institutional leadership. He served at North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and U.S. Northern Command, where he played an instrumental role in refreshing the U.S. Department of Defense Arctic strategy—an increasingly vital area of continental and international security. His leadership path later brought him back to RMC as Commandant in 2013, reaffirming his enduring connection to the institution and its cadets.

Promoted to Major‑General in 2015, Meinzinger was appointed Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force before assuming command of the RCAF in May 2018. He would go on to serve as the longest‑serving Commander of the RCAF in the past 60 years, leading the force through one of its most significant modernization periods and ensuring Canada maintained effective and modern air and space capabilities. He retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in August 2022 after 37 years of distinguished service.

In recognition of his contributions, Meinzinger was appointed a Commander of the Order of Military Merit and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and the Canadian Forces’ Decoration—honours that reflect both the scope and impact of his service.

Since retiring from uniformed service, Meinzinger has continued to serve Canada in a new capacity. In June 2024, he joined Boeing as President of Boeing Canada and Boeing Canada Operations Ltd. As country leader, he oversees Boeing’s business interests across Canada, including more than 2,000 employees, approximately 500 suppliers, and all Boeing commercial and defence aircraft operations in the country.

In this role, Meinzinger also provides leadership for Boeing Canada’s community sponsorships and contributions programs, with ongoing priorities that include defence procurement, supplier development, sustainable aviation, and innovation partnerships with Canadian industry and academia. His transition from military leadership to industry leadership reflects a consistent theme throughout his career: stewardship, responsibility, and service to the nation.

From the parade square at RMC to the command of Canada’s air force, and now to shaping the future of Canadian aerospace, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Al Meinzinger exemplifies the enduring value of RMC alumni leadership. Once a guardian of the skies, always a guardian of the skies.
