BRIGADIER-GENERAL (Ret’d) W. DON MACNAMARA – 2013 VIMY AWARD WINNER

The CDA Institute is pleased to announce that Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Don W. Macnamara has been unanimously selected as the recipient of the Vimy Award for 2013. The award will be presented on Friday, 8 November, at a mixed gala reception and dinner in the Canadian War Museum, Ottawa.

Following a 37-year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Canadian Forces, Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Macnamara joined the faculty of the School of Business at Queen’s University. He was a Visiting Professor at the Universitat Kaiserslautern, Germany, and in 1994 directed the start-up of the Queen’s University International Study Centre, Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex, England. Later, he developed and directed a Public Executive Program for the Queen’s University School of Business and became the Director of the International Business Program for the University’s Executive MBA. In retirement, beginning in 1999, he continued as an Associate Adjunct Professor and taught part-time in the Commerce and EMBA programs at Queen’s. He was the Director and Associate Director of the Public Executive Program. He was also a Faculty Associate and Senior Fellow in the University’s Centre for International Relations. He has also taught on every Canadian Forces College Command and Staff Course since 1974.

Brigadier-General (Ret’d) Macnamara was President of the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies, of which he was a founding member, and led the establishment of the Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping Centre. He is a former President of the CDA Institute. He is the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Royal Military College of Canada and a member of CDA Institute’s Board of Directors.

The Award honours the bravery and sacrifices of the Canadian soldiers who were victorious at the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917.

The CDA Institute is the sponsor of the Vimy Award since 1991.

Previous recipients of the Vimy Award include eminent Canadians, from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some of those recipients include the Rt. Hon. Joe Clark (first recipient), General Paul D. Manson, Général Ray Henault, General Rick Hillier, Warrant Officer William MacDonald, the Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson, Major-General Jonathan Vance, and Honourary Colonel Frederick Mannix (last year).

The Vimy Award Selection Committee was composed of General (Ret’d) Raymond Henault, as Chairman and, as Members, the Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, General Thomas Lawson, Lieutenant-General (Ret’d) Richard J. Evraire, Dr. John Scott Cowan, Honourary Colonel Blake C. Goldring, Honourary Colonel Paul Hindo, M. Richard Bertrand, Mr. Rick Bowes, Mr. Danny Deep, Mr. Dan Donovan, Dr. George Lampropoulos and Mme Louise Mercier.

L’Institut de la CAD a le plaisir d’annoncer que le Brigadier-général (ret.) Don W. Macnamara a été choisi à l’unanimité comme récipiendaire du Prix Vimy 2013. Le prix lui sera présenté le vendredi 8 novembre dans le cadre d’une réception et d’un dîner de gala tenus au Musée canadien de la guerre, à Ottawa.

Apres sa carrière de 37 ans dans l’Aviation royale du Canada et dans les Forces canadiennes, le Brigadier-général (ret.) Macnamara s’est joint à la School of Business de l’Université Queen’s. Il a été professeur invité à l’Universität Kaiserslautern (Allemagne) et, en 1994, il a dirigé le démarrage du International Study Centre de l’Université Queen’s, au Herstmonceux Castle, East Sussex (Angleterre). Plus tard, il a élaboré et dirigé un International Business Program pour l’Executive MBA de l’Université. À sa retraite, à compter de 1999, il a continué comme professeur auxiliaire adjoint et enseigné à temps partiel dans les programmes Commerce et EMBA de Queen’s. Il a été directeur et directeur associé du Public Executive Program. Il a aussi été Faculty Associate et Senior Fellow du Centre for International Relations de l’Université. Il a également enseigné à chaque cours du Collège de commandement et d’état-major des Forces canadiennes depuis 1974.

Le Brigadier-général (ret.) Macnamara et été président de l’Institut canadien d’études stratégiques, dont il est un des membres fondateurs, et il a dirigé l’établissement du Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping Centre. Il est ancien président de l’Institut de la CAD. Il est président du Conseil des Gouverneurs du Collège miltaire royale du Canada et membre du conseil d’administration de l’Institut de la CAD.

Le prix Vimy est ainsi nommé en l’honneur de la bravoure et des sacrifices des soldats canadiens qui ont remporté la victoire à la bataille de la Crête de Vimy, en avril 1917.

C’est l’Institut de la CAD qui parraine le Prix Vimy depuis 1991.

Les récipiendaires précédents du Prix Vimy sont d’éminent Canadiens provenant d’une grande variété de milieux, entre autres, le Très hon. Joe Clark (premier récipiendaire), le général Paul D. Manson, le général Raymond R. Henault, le général Rick Hillier, l’adjudant William MacDonald, la Très hon. Adrienne Clarkson, le major-général Jonathan Vance et le colonel honoraire Federick Mannix (l’an passé).

Le comité de sélection du Prix Vimy était composé du général (ret.) Raymond Henault, qui le présidait, et de la Très Honorable Beverley McLachlin, du général Thomas Lawson, du lieutenant-général (ret.) Richard J. Evraire, de M. John Scott Cowan, du colonel honoraire Blake C. Goldring, du colonel honoraire Paul Hindo, de messieurs Richard Bertrand, Rick Bowes, Danny Deep, Dan Donovan, George Lampropoulos et madame Louise Mercier.
