Canadian Interuniversity Sport, in conjunction with the Canadian Fencing Federation, announced the seven student-athletes who will represent Canada in fencing at the 2015 Summer Universiade in Gwangju, South Korea. Rounding out the delegation is head coach and team manager Patricia Howes from Royal Military College, who was also Team Canada’s coach two years ago in Kazan.
The Summer Universiade is an international multi-sport event that takes place every two years and is second only to the Olympic Games in the number of participating athletes and countries. The Universiade is open to competitors who are at least 17 and less than 28 years of age as of January 1 in the year of the Games. Participants must be full-time students at a post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) or have graduated from a post-secondary institution in the year preceding the event.
Canadian fencers have captured two Universiade medals over the years, including silver in the men’s team epee competition in 1987 in Zagreb and a third-place finish by Madeleine Philion in foil in 1983 in Edmonton.
The Gwangju tourney is set for July 4 to 9.

Sport interuniversitaire canadien, en collaboration avec la Fédération canadienne d’escrime, a dévoilé l’identité des sept étudiants-athlètes qui représenteront le Canada en escrime aux Universiades d’été de 2015 qui se dérouleront à Gwangju, en Corée du Sud. La délégation est complétée par l’entraîneure et gérante d’équipe Patricia Howes du Collège militaire royal, qui était également l’entraîneure du Canada aux jeux de Kazan.
Les Universiades d’été sont un événement multi-sport international qui se déroule tous les deux ans et qui se classe au deuxième rang, derrière les Jeux olympiques, au niveau du nombre d’athlètes et de pays participants. Les Universiades sont ouvertes à tous les compétiteurs âgés entre 17 et 28 ans l’année des Jeux et qui sont des étudiants à temps plein dans une institution d’enseignement postsecondaire (université, collège, Cégep) ou ont complété leurs études dans une institution postsecondaire au cours de l’année précédant l’événement.
Les escrimeurs canadiens ont remporté deux médailles aux Universiades au fil des ans, incluant l’argent lors de la compétition masculine par équipe à l’épée en 1987 à Zagreb et une troisième place par Madeleine Philion au fleuret en 1983 à Edmonton.
Le tournoi de Gwangju se déroulera du 4 au 9 juillet.

Cadets & Ex Cadets Big Presence on CISM (W) Volleyball Team

In preparation for the 6th Military World Games in South Korea, the women’s CISM volleyball program competed in the 2015 USA Volleyball Open National Championships, Detroit, 22-24 May. This 86th annual event is considered one of the largest National Championships in any sport in the United-States. Hosting an estimated 550 teams and over 6,000 athletes.
The team had a strong RMC Women’s Volleyball Alumni presence and at times was a flashback to the very successful team that represented the Paladins for the Ontario University Final Four Playoffs in 2012.
The strong defensive play and aggressive offence lead the team to one of the best CISM tournament results in many years. A few highlights from the tournament were big wins over All-Navy(25-12, 25-12) and All-Army (25-10, 25-19). Leading the tournament offense was (IV) OCdt Cassidy Chang, tallying 167 set assists, AB Norah Collins 42 kills and 2LT Chelsey Litjens with 12 serve aces. Leading the team defense was SLt Kelsey Chang 107 digs and Pte Vanessa St-Georges with 10 stuff blocks.
After three long days of tournament play, an exhibition match was played Sunday evening featuring CISM Canada vs an All-Star team representing the best USA Army, Air Force and Navy. This match had many long battled rallies, laughs and a competitive spirit that represents just what the CISM program is all about “Friendship Through Sport”. While Canada had the lead at the side change in the third set, they could not hold it and would drop this exhibition match 22-25, 25-20, 10-15.
CISM team veteran, class of 2005, 23126 Captain Jillian Bristow (currently – 417 Squadron SAR Helicopter Pilot), had this to say about her experience this time around:
“I had a very cool experience during this tournament. I was roommates with Cassidy Chang, our team’s setter and 4th year mechanical engineer student at RMC. It was really interesting talking about our individual experiences at RMC. Despite the changes to the college, such as number of squadrons and new buildings, we were both surprised at how much things stay the same. Having been an engineering student and on the varsity team, I was reminded of the intense schedule and demands of the college life. The skills that you learn in order to maintain balance at the college stay with you for the rest of your life. Along with the friends!”
(IV) OCdt Nicole Behnke also represented the college, recognizing just how special it is to represent the Canadian Armed Forces. Nicole had this to say about her experience.
“Representing the Canadian Military at the USA Nationals this weekend was a great experience. It was especially cool to first meet and then play against members of the American Army, Air Force and Navy Teams”
In attendance, were familiar supporters of the RMC Program mom (Tracy) and dad (Henry) 15378 Litjens, who made the drive from Ottawa to support the team in Detroit. Special thanks to Henry for taking some great pictures that captured some very candid moments on the court that reflected the programs intense competitive spirit.

uOttawa announces return of suspended hockey team
The University of Ottawa has announced the relaunch of its varsity men’s hockey program, which will be ready to compete in the 2016–17 season. The team was suspended and its head coach fired following allegations that players were involved in a sexual assault while travelling with the team; police later charged two players. uOttawa has introduced measures to foster a positive environment for the team, including behavioural guidelines for all student-athletes and coaches; mandatory orientation sessions for student-athletes on hazing, harassment, anti-doping, and appropriate behaviour; a new Sports Services ethics and discipline committee; and a plan to implement the recommendations of the Task Force on Respect and Equality.
