Direct from Panet House

Happy New Year, Bonne année!

The entire Panet House team sincerely hopes that everyone enjoyed a wonderful holiday and we wish everyone the best for 2016.

2015 was an incredibly successful and productive year for the Club by any measure. The Club enjoyed excellent reunions with very strong participation, great support financially from eVeritas supporters and Branches, and excellent life membership sales raising the total number of life members to almost 7,000. Not to mention that the Club very smoothly transitioned to new governance structure with a Board of Governors, revised its Constitution, and benefited from the support and advice of the new General Advisory Council.

That said, 2016 is shaping up to be an excellent year for a variety of reasons as the both Saint-Jean and Kingston colleges will be celebrating historical milestones.  Saint-Jean is celebrating the 350th Anniversary of Fort Saint-Jean and Kingston will be celebrating the 140th Anniversary of the College.

I would be remiss if I did not mention that there will also be a Chasse-galerie this year orchestrated by the Class of 1971 which enters the Old Brigade this September.  This unique and enjoyable event is a great fund raiser for the Danny McLeod Athletic Endowment Fund.

The last special Club event of the year is the Birchall Dinner which is being co-hosted by the Hamilton Branch on Saturday, 29 October 2016 at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum.

Key Dates for 2016:

  •  23 January. RMCC vs West Point Hockey Game with two afternoon alumni games against West Point varsity alumni which will commence at 1200 and 1330 hours respectively.
  • 29-31 January. Le tournoi de ballon-balai du CMR Saint-Jean qui aura lieu du 29 au 31 janvier.
  • 19-20 May. RMCC Convocation and Commissioning Parade
  • 15 May.
  • 20-21 May.
  • 9-11 September 2016. Royal Roads Homecoming Weekend
  • 22-25 September 2016. RMCC Reunion Weekend in Kingston
  • 29 October. Birchall Leadership Award Dinner at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Hamilton, ON

The first major event on the year is the hosting of the RMCC versus West Point hockey in Kingston.  The Club is again pleased to host the pre-game “Warm-Up” at Fort Frontenac which is conveniently located across the road from the K-Rock Centre.  Here are the salient details:

This year, the College will be hosting the 80th installment of the historic hockey series with its American brethren from the United States Military Academy on Saturday, January 23rd, 2016 at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.  Puck drop is set for 7:30 PM.

All club members and friends of the Club are encouraged to purchase tickets through the Club which includes the “Warm-up” event and the game. Either call the Club to book or book on-line at http://rmcalumni.ca/events/pre-game-warm-up-event-2016/ .

Timings and Programme.  The event will kick-off at the Fort Frontenac Officers’ Mess at 5:00 pm.  It is envisaged that the Commandant will attend and that the coach of the RMC Hockey Team, Richard Lim, will say a few words to the collective group. The buffet line will open at 6:00 pm and there will be brats on a bun for everyone. There will be coffee, tea and dessert squares. Shortly after 7:00, everyone will be encouraged to walk to the K-Rock Centre entering through Gate 3. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Parking is authorized for all attendees within the Fort itself and, if required, there is additional parking behind Normandy Hall on the other side of Highway 2 which has a convenient pedestrian underpass into the Fort.

The Mess will also be open for your enjoyment after the game.

As mentioned earlier, this year marks the 350th anniversary of Fort Saint-Jean and given the long connection of the military to Saint-Jean, many additional special events will be added in recognition of the occasion.

New Member Benefits

The Club is indebted to John Carswell, Class of 78 grad and President of Canso Investment Counsel, who has developed a new mutual fund initiative which will benefit the Club and its members. Specifically, there is now a new Lysander TDV Fund. More details will be promulgated soon.

As well, the Club has entered into an agreement with Porter Air which will provide Club members with a standing 10% discount for themselves and travelling companions. More details will be made available shortly.

Lastly, I would also like to draw your attention to the CFOne appreciation programme which is available to all serving and retired military members.

Introducing the New Platinum CFOne Card

Since 2013, Canadian Forces Morale and Welfare Services has issued almost 150,000 CFOne Cards to members of the Canadian Forces Community, that is One Million Strong. The benefits associated with the CFOne Card have been enhanced in the past two years and, as a result, it is necessary that CFOne cards clearly reflect the membership category of the card holder – this is why CFMWS is introducing the new Platinum CFOne Card.

The new Platinum CFOne Card is available for issue to all currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans and their respective families. Not only is the colour different, but the new CFOne cards will clearly identify the category of membership to allow businesses and partners to ensure that their discounts and special offers reach their intended audience.

The CFOne Card can be used to access the CF Appreciation Program; CFOne cardholders can unlock thousands of opportunities to save whether they are looking for an everyday savings or a discount on that next getaway.  Visit www.cfappreciation.ca to start saving today!

In closing, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Bill Oliver who conducted another highly successful eVeritas sponsorship campaign which not only met but exceeded the goal.  Of course, the success of this campaign is directly attributable to the very generous support of Club members and our corporate partners.  Thank you for your assistance to the Club and support to eVeritas.
