The journey of Colonel (Ret’d) Brian Akitt, RRMC/RMC Class of 1974, is a powerful reminder that extraordinary opportunities often begin with a single decision.
Growing up on a farm in small-town Ontario, Brian could hardly have imagined that his path would one day take him across Canada, into international military leadership roles, and ultimately to the executive ranks of Canada’s defence industry. Yet it was his acceptance into the Regular Officer Training Plan in 1970 that set the course for a remarkable career defined by service, leadership, and a commitment to excellence.
Arriving at Royal Roads Military College as a young officer cadet, Brian embraced the opportunity to broaden his horizons. What began as a chance to see more of Canada evolved into a lifelong journey of leadership and service. The values instilled during his years at RRMC and RMC became the foundation for a distinguished 30-year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Over three decades of military service, Brian rose through positions of increasing responsibility, becoming one of Canada’s most respected aviation leaders. Among his many accomplishments, he served as Commanding Officer of the Sea King helicopter community at both 12 Wing Shearwater in Nova Scotia and Patricia Bay in British Columbia, leading highly skilled personnel in demanding operational environments. He also represented Canada in multinational assignments, including service in Mons, Belgium, where he contributed to international defence cooperation.
One of the defining chapters of his career came in 2002 when he was deployed to the Sinai Peninsula with the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO). As Chief of Liaison and Commander of the Canadian Contingent, Brian played a critical role in maintaining dialogue and cooperation between Egypt and Israel under the provisions of the historic peace treaty between the two nations. Leading personnel from numerous allied countries, he worked tirelessly to foster communication, resolve incidents, and help preserve stability in one of the world’s most complex regions. Reflecting on the role, Brian described it as a true “24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year” responsibility, requiring diplomacy, perseverance, and exceptional leadership.
Following his retirement from the Canadian Armed Forces, Brian continued to make an impact in Canada’s defence and aerospace sectors. He joined General Dynamics Canada, serving as Senior Director for Air and Naval Systems, where he helped shape programs and capabilities that support Canada’s military operations. He later became President of CANAVAIR Associates Inc., continuing to provide strategic leadership and expertise to the defence community.
Brian’s story exemplifies the enduring value of a Canadian Military College education. From a young student seeking opportunity, to commanding military units, representing Canada on the international stage, and leading within the defence industry, his career reflects the principles of Truth, Duty, and Valour in action.
Today, his legacy serves as an inspiration to current officer cadets and fellow alumni alike. It demonstrates that leadership is not simply about rank or position. It is about embracing challenges, serving others, and using every opportunity to make a meaningful difference.
For the Class of 1974 and the broader Canadian Military Colleges community, Colonel (Ret’d) Brian Akitt stands as a shining example of how the lessons learned at RRMC and RMC can shape a lifetime of service, leadership, and impact.
