From his early days near Salmon Arm, British Columbia—where a passion for aviation first took flight through Air Cadets and gliding scholarships—Max Shaw has exemplified a life defined by curiosity, leadership, and a spirit of adventure.
A Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC ’93), Max’s academic journey continued through the prestigious Athlone Fellowship, leading him to complete a Master’s degree in Flight Dynamics at Cranfield University in the United Kingdom. His time abroad was marked not only by academic excellence but also by a pursuit of challenge—whether in whitewater kayaking or climbing—reflecting the resilience and determination instilled during his formative years at RMC.
Max went on to build a distinguished career as an Aerospace Engineering Officer (AERE) in the Royal Canadian Air Force, with a particular focus on the Maritime Helicopter community. His service included operational postings aboard HMCS PROVIDER and PRESERVER, as well as a three-year exchange tour with the Royal Navy—experiences that broadened his expertise across both air and maritime domains. Notably, his unique qualifications, including a Ship’s Diving Badge, set him apart even among his peers.
In his final military appointment, Max served as Commanding Officer of 12 Air Maintenance Squadron and as the Maritime Helicopter Senior Air Maintenance Authority—capstone roles that underscored his technical mastery and leadership within the Canadian Armed Forces.
Yet, in true RMC spirit, Max’s journey did not end with military service. Seeking a shared family adventure, he and his wife Elizabeth—herself an accomplished Canadian Armed Forces member—set sail with their young children aboard SV Fluenta. Over the course of an extraordinary multi-year voyage spanning 36,000 nautical miles, the Shaw family navigated the Pacific Ocean, living and learning together across New Zealand, Micronesia, Tahiti, and beyond. Their journey, marked by both challenge and wonder, captured the imagination of audiences through media features and their family blog.
Upon returning to Canada, Max transformed his passion for the sea into entrepreneurial success, co-founding Fluenta Marine Services. Today, he continues to inspire others as a Yacht Broker and Yachtmaster Instructor, helping clients from around the world embark on their own journeys—having supported nearly 180 clients in buying or selling vessels globally.
Service remains a constant in Max’s life. As a volunteer coxswain with the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, he continues to give back to his community, embodying the enduring values of service before self. His legacy is further reflected in his family, with his eldest son now following in his footsteps as a Mechanical Engineering cadet at RMC.
