Eat, Swim, Bike, Run, Sleep, Repeat

Author : RMC Triathlon

Like many cadets, the CISM Triathlon team spent Spring Break at a warm and sunny destination, however there was little down time on this trip! While many cadets were on a beach soaking up the sun or getting their skydiving qualification, the triathlon team was busy training for the upcoming Brazil World Military Games. They conducted an 11 day training camp in Clermont, Florida at the National Training Centre. The National Training Centre is the training base for several elite triathletes. The training camp consisted of a minimum of two workouts daily of approximately two hours each in swimming, biking and running.

Although the CISM triathlon team is open to all military members, over half of the membership is current or past students and staff from RMC. Cdr Lucie Tremblay, LCdr Jason Lawton, LCdr Gord Roy, Maj David Brassard, Lt Breanne Gibson and Lt David Lacombe were among the ex-cadets at the camp. LCdr Doug Poucher and LCdr Trevor Davies, currently posted to RMC participated with students Capt Megan Cromarty, NCdt Aaron Bradley, OCdt Andreas Schabetsberger and OCdt Olivier Bonvouloir.

The RMC contingent started the trip with a 26 hour drive to Florida. After arriving at their destination in the middle of the night, they learned that their first timing was 0600hrs the next morning! The first practice was a swim in the 50m outdoor pool at the National Training Centre. It was still dark outside and it was difficult to see anything because of fog! However, everyone made it through the first practice and then prepared for the bike and run in the afternoon. Each day brought on new challenges and new pains, but overall was a very rewarding experience. Although there was little time to relax and enjoy sunny Florida, the team split up and explored Daytona Beach, Orlando and Cocao Beach one afternoon near the finish of the camp.

For anyone interested in learning more about the camp or CISM triathlon, visit training camp blog at http://cftriathlon.blogspot.com/ or contact the CISM triathlon manager, LCdr Lawton at jason.lawton@forces.gc.ca . RMC has a triathlon club and is always taking in new members who want to try their first triathlon or improve their current skills. Contact the RMC triathlon club president NCdt Aaron Bradley at s25005@rmc.ca for more information.

RMC WOMEN’S SOCCER HEADING TO WEST COAST

By: Chad Beaulieu – (w) Soccer Coach

The women’s soccer program will travel to Vancouver Island in the middle of March for spring competition. From 16-20 March the team will stay at CFB Esquimalt and take on two established soccer programs as women’s soccer continue their development over the winter term. The trip will also give six of the team members a chance to represent RMC in their home province in front of family and friends.

On 17 March, RMC will face the Vancouver Island University Mariners in what will be the first meeting between these two programs. The Mariners play in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) and have won four provincial championships and one national title. VIU finished 4th this past season in BCCAA competition but posted an undefeated season in league play. The game will be played at Merle Logan Field in Nanaimo, BC at 1pm.

The Paladins will then face the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday, March 19. Weather permitting, the game will be played at Centennial Stadium (otherwise on their field turf) at 12pm. The Vikes are a dominant program in Canada West competition having qualified for the CIS National Championships from 2005-09 and winning the national title in 2005.

Playing in their home province will be OCdts Sam Beckett (IV), Paige Campbell (I), Lyndsay Cross (II), Adelaide Fearnley (I), Marika Rueben (I) and Kelly Milliken (I). From the mainland are Beckett, Cross and Fearnley, respectfully from Coquitlam, Chilliwack and Gibsons, BC. And from Vancouver Island are Campbell, Courtenay, BC and Rueben & Milliken, both from Victoria, BC.

Beckett witnessed RMC compete the last time the program visited Vancouver Island in 2007 and played with the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club. She attended Centennial Secondary Scholl in Coquitlam, BC. Cross attended Chilliwack Secondary School and played for Chilliwack FC before coming to RMC. Fearnley had been with the North Shore Girls Soccer Club playing in both the Metro BC league as well as in the Pacific Coast Soccer League. She attended Elphinstone Secondary.

Campbell played her club soccer with Comox Valley United SC and competed in the last five BC provincial championships, while attending Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School. Rueben played for St. Margarets School prior to her enrolment at RMC. Milliken was a goalkeeper for the Lakehill Soccer Club. She has played with both their youth teams and senior women’s team and attended Reynolds Secondary.

Both the Mariners and the Vikes will present difficult challenges for the Paladins, however RMC has been preparing diligently since the middle of January for this spring competition. The opportunity to travel to Canada’s west coast will provide a terrific window into RMC for those who have little or no knowledge of our nation’s military university and its varsity programs.
