BDO Canada has welcomed Matthew Hartney (RMC 2008) as a partner in its assurance practice in Victoria, British Columbia—an important milestone in a career defined by service, leadership, and a deep commitment to public trust.

With nearly two decades of experience working with government and public‑sector organizations across Canada, Matthew has built a distinguished career supporting strong financial stewardship and transparent public reporting. His work has spanned federal, provincial, municipal, and First Nations governments, with expertise in budgeting and planning, accounting operations, and financial and public reporting—core functions that underpin accountability and long‑term community sustainability.

In his new role, Matthew will support BDO’s national Government and Public Sector (GPS) platform and lead a Western Canada team focused on British Columbia’s public sector and First Nations governments. Through this work, he will help strengthen financial management practices and support public‑serving organizations in delivering meaningful outcomes for the communities they serve.

Prior to joining BDO, Matthew spent four years at Deloitte, where he served as lead business partner for the Government of British Columbia. His earlier career includes senior leadership roles as General Manager of Financial Advisory Services at PSD Citywide and as a principal in the financial advisory practice at Corvée Professional Accounting Corp., along with private‑ and Crown‑sector experience at NAV Canada and EY.

A graduate of the Royal Military College of Canada, Matthew holds an MBA from RMC in addition to a bachelor’s degree from the University of Saskatchewan. As a Chartered Professional Accountant, he brings professionalism, integrity, and rigour to every role—values that reflect the RMC ethos and its enduring commitment to Truth, Duty, Valour.
