College Prof Appointed to St. Lawrence College Board of Governors
Professor Michael A Hennessy, the current co-chair of RMCC’s War Studies programme and the former dean of the Canadian Forces Military College and Division of Continuing Studies, has been appointed through a Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Order in Council to the Board of Governors of St. Lawrence College. This is Dr. Hennessy’s second three year appointment and he is currently vice-chair of the Board.

Competitive Sailing Team at USNA

On Thursday September 13th the RMC Competitive Sailing Club headed down to the United States Naval Academy to participate in the Shields Trophy Regatta on the 15th and 16th of September. The practice day saw the team learning how to sail Navy 44’s (provided by USNA) and coming together as a team. All of the practice over the course of the practice day and the first day of racing paid off during racing on Sunday when the team gain a 4th place finish.
The Shields Trophy Regatta is an event that RMC has gone to for a few years and is always the first event of the season. It allows both the new and old member of the team to come together at the start of each year. Look for more to follow from the competitive club during the remainder of the fall.

6508 MGen (ret) John Adams Shares “Whole of Government” at Military & Strategic Studies Social
6508 MGen (ret) John Adams, 65 was the guest speaker at the first Military & Strategic Studies program of the year which was recently held in the Cadet Formal Mess.
MGen Adams has a very impressive background. He graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the Royal Military College of Canada in 1965, was awarded a Rhodes scholarship and attended Oxford.
In the army, Adams served in the engineering corps, retiring from the Canadian Forces in 1993 as a major general. He was then appointed an assistant deputy minister (ADM) for the Defence Department.
He served from 2003 to June 2005 as ADM and Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), and from 1998 to 2003 as ADM, Marine Services and Commissioner, CCG.
He also served as chief of Communications Security Establishment Canada.
The very personable retired Major General spoke to a small group of Cadets and Post-Grad students on the history and success of the “Whole of Government” approach used by Canada in Afghanistan. He described the history of the concept before detailing its use in Afghanistan and potential uses in the future.
As an aside, following his return from Oxford he was a key member of the very first Canadian Forces national hockey championship team, Chilliwack Chiefs, in 1968. He continues to play ‘old timers’ hockey to this day.
Golf and cycling fill his spare time during the summer. He is still in uniform as the Honourary LCol of the Governor General’s Foot Guards.

Expedition Club AGM Leaves Cadets Excited for More

On Wednesday night, the RMC Expedition Club met for its Annual General Meeting for the 2012-13 academic year. With a great turnout and an atmosphere of anticipation, members old and new were briefed on Expedition Club activities of the past and plans for this year’s activities.
25982 OCdt (III) Colin Strong, the club’s president for the previous semester, outlined his intent to see an increase in member-involvement in smaller outings, while still maintaining emphasis on the club’s trademark expeditions. OCdt Strong will be replaced this semester as president by 26268 OCdt (II) Stéphanie Paquette, who has numerous impressive accomplishments to her name, including her large role in fundraising for the 2011-12 Kilimanjaro Expedition.
Other highlights included the re-election of the rest of the club’s executive, as well as a sneak peek into plans for the next expedition. After two resounding successes in the past year with the Kilimanjaro and Amazon Expeditions, the club is setting its sights on something a bit cooler (literally), the Arctic. More will undoubtedly follow as the club powers on ‘to the ends of the Earth’.

College Takes Time Out to Honour Achievements

This past Wednesday morning, the College paused to honour the achievements of members of the RMCC family. With the Cadet Wing resplendent in their No. 4’s, Cadets, members of the Training Wing Staff, faculty members, and members of the Support Staff were all honoured at the parade held indoors in the Kingston Military Community Sports Centre.
“Taking the time to honour our personnel is important,” BGen Eric Tremblay, College Commandant, told those present, “because there are a lot of individual and team efforts taking place at RMCC.” Indeed, some thirty members of the College family were presented with medals and awards, twenty of them with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. In addition to the recognition bestowed at the parade, BGen Tremblay indicated that he is trying to ensure that the efforts of College Staff are recognized outside the peninsula. “I have asked the Principal to prepare files for the National Corporate Awards and Recognition Program.”
The second year Commandant also took the time to recognize the accomplishments of the Class of 2013, which will graduate in just a little over 200 days. “I’ve looked closely at the Class of 2013 since my arrival in 2011, and I am most impressed by your abilities to lead the way, walk the talk, and develop. You are on your way to being officers, well educated, and able to lead with distinction the men and women of the Canadian Forces,” BGen Tremblay told them.
