Otter and 9 Squadron Cadets were at the forefront during the official opening ceremony for Fort Brant. From the impeccable Quarter Guard that greeted the Minister upon his arrival to the eloquent tour guides, they put on an impressive display of what an RMC cadet can do for the VIPs present at the event.

“Otter Squadron, which embodies the most senior of our cadet population, and also those cadets with the greatest military experience, play a fundamental role in the life of the College. With the opening of this building, I am so very pleased that they now have a place to call home.”

Brigadier-General Tom Lawson, RMC Commandant

The Honourable Peter Gordon MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, officially opened a $12M dormitory at the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) on Monday March 3, 2008. The new dormitory is part of a five-phase project aimed at renewal of site services, renovating three dormitories and building an additional one for RMC cadets.

“The completion of this project is an important step in ensuring quality accommodations and the best possible learning environment for RMC cadets,” said Minister MacKay. “It also exemplifies the federal government’s commitment to the Quality of Life of Canadian Forces personnel.”

The new four-storey dormitory houses 90 RMC cadets and contains single and double bed/study rooms, storage facilities, a lounge area, and washroom and laundry facilities. The new dormitory is called Fort Brant in honour of two noted Aboriginal leaders who played an important role in the history of Canada, siblings Joseph and Molly Brant.

Chief R. Donald Maracle, Chief of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte, from Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory (itself named after Joseph Brant) was on present for the occasion. “It is an honour and a privilege to be here today for the opening of Fort Brant named in honour of Joseph and Molly Brant who carried considerable influence with the Iroquois Confederacy during the American Revolution.”

Brigadier-General Tom Lawson, RMC Commandant, commented on the significance of Fort Brant for the cadets. “Otter Squadron, which embodies the most senior of our cadet population, and also those cadets with the greatest military experience, play a fundamental role in the life of the College. With the opening of this building, I am so very pleased that they now have a place to call home.”

The entire project, which will end up costing approximately $70M, is a five-phase project. There is only one phase left before completion, the renovation of another dormitory at RMC, Fort Champlain, expected to be finished in 2011.
