5786Joe Aitchison – Class of ’63 holds the appointment of Colonel of The Regiment of The Royal Canadian Regiment.
The Colonel-in-Chief, HRH The Prince Philip, visited Canada recently to present a new Regimental Colour to the 3rd Battalion. The presentation took place on 27 April.
As Colonel of The Regiment, Joe had the pleasure and honour to act as HRH’s host during his visit.
To start of the special occasion Joe and the Governor-General welcomed Prince Philip to Canada. Later at a special dinner held in his honour at the Royal York. – special in that only members of the Regimental family were in attendance at the dinner.
From all media reports and speaking with those involved it was a special event indeed.

Busy Summer for RMCC Fencing Coaches
The arrival of summer usually means some down time for most fencing coaches in Canada, but this is not the case for local coaches, Patricia and David Howes. The summer of 2013 looks to be the busiest ever for the Kingston coaching duo.
Patricia, who is the Head Coach of the RMCC varsity fencing program will be the head coach at two different Games events this summer. She was recently selected by the Canadian Fencing Federation to lead Team Canada at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia in July. This major international event for university students or recent graduates is considered a stepping stone to the Olympics for many sports. The Canadian fencing contingent will also feature three athletes with a Kingston connection. Kerr Hutchinson, a member of Kingston’s Cutting Edge Fencing and University of Ottawa student, will compete in the men’s epee individual and team events. Steven Morris, a 2013 graduate of the RMC fencing program will compete in men’s sabre, while another RMC graduate, Chantel Helwer, will fence in the women’s sabre events. The fencing competition takes place from July 6-12.
Once Patricia returns from Russia, she will immediately begin final preparations as the Head Coach for Team Ontario at the 2013 Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke. This event, which will be Howes’ fifth as a Canada Games coach, will take place from August 10-18. Local fencer, Kerr Hutchinson, is currently in the running to be selected for the Ontario team.
The other half of the Howes coaching team, David, who is the head coach of the Cutting Edge Fencing program and Patricia’s assistant coach at RMCC, has an equally busy summer ahead of him. Howes, who is also a national team weapon leader with the Canadian Fencing Federation, recently returned from a women’s épée World Cup in Havana. Later this month he will be coaching the Canadian team at the Senior Pan-American Championships in Cartagena, Columbia. Then in July he will take some of Canada’s top women’s épéeists to a ten day intensive training camp in Amposta, Spain. This camp is run by legendary French fencing coach, Daniel Levavasseur, coach of the gold medal winning Chinese women’s épée team from the 2012 Olympics, and will serve as the primary preparation event for the Canadian team for world championships. Immediately following this training camp, Howes will take the senior women’s team for a week of training in Budapest, just prior to the 2013 senior world championships, to be held there from August 5-11.

CISM (W) Volleyball

The CISM women’s volleyball team is preparing to embark on an opportunity of a lifetime. They will be travelling to Costa Rica for a week long trip during which they will engage in various training sessions, competitions, and cultural tours. Due to the efforts of Coach Welden, there are 16 ladies in total heading out on this trip, allowing for the creation of two teams of 8 ladies each. RMC women’s volleyball team is representing almost half of the players attending this years training event; there are 2 third year players, Chelsey Litjens and Danielle Vortisch; two recently graduated players, Kelsey Chang and Norah Collins; and two graduates from 2012, Melissa McCoy and Nicole Shingoose. The current team is the strongest CISM women’s volleyball team in history, and as such, tremendous success is predicted for this upcoming camp.
We will be staying in the capital city San Jose from where we will be travelling to the hosting team’s venue. We will be playing against the National team, the Tennis Club, the Atenas, San Jose, and the Goicochea; the level of competition is thus very high, and such a competition will add tremendous experience to the young ladies participating in this event. It will be especially helpful for RMCC’s returning players, Chelsey and Danielle, as they will be able to bring back the knowledge and experience gained from playing against national level athletes to their teammates for the upcoming RMCC season.
