2025 National Memorial Silver Cross Mother – Nancy Payne
For close to nineteen years, Nancy has presented a special athletic award in Randy’s memory to a deserving student at the high school he attended in Gananoque. The “Captain’s Award” is given to a student who shows leadership and athletic skill, and has good marks. Randy loved hockey and was a good player, becoming a local star and captain of the Gananoque Islanders. She also speaks about him on that occasion. “I just want people to know about him, and I don’t want people to forget him,” she says.

As part of a Canadian War Museum initiative, “In Their Own Voices,” aimed at creating accounts of veteran experience after war or military service, Dr. Howard Coombs (3 Commando 1989-1991) is researching the ongoing efforts made by Canadian Airborne Regiment members to preserve the “Airborne brotherhood” after the 1995 disbandment. Key research questions aim to outline the idea of the “Airborne Brotherhood” and how that spirit has been preserved.

More than 40,000 Canadian Armed Forces members served in Afghanistan over the 14-year campaign. Very few Canadians understand why we were in Afghanistan and why it was important, yet it was Canada’s longest war. Fallen Heroes is the template for a 10-part documentary series on the war in Afghanistan preserving this little-known history for future generations.
