On June 1, RMC marked a remarkable milestone: 150 years since the first class of officer cadets arrived on the historic grounds of Point Frederick in Kingston. It is an anniversary that invites both celebration and reflection, celebration of a national institution that has helped shape Canada’s military and civic leadership, and reflection on the generations of graduates whose service has strengthened our country at home and abroad.
Established in the years following Confederation, RMC was created at a formative moment in Canada’s history, when the young Dominion was assuming greater responsibility for its own defence and national institutions. From its opening in 1876, the College was entrusted with an ambitious purpose: to educate and prepare officers who would combine military competence with intellectual discipline, physical resilience, ethical judgment, and a deep sense of public duty.
Across a century and a half, that purpose has endured. RMC graduates have served Canada in war and peace, in times of national emergency and international uncertainty, and in missions that have carried Canadian values far beyond our borders. They have led in the Canadian Armed Forces, supported peace and security operations, advanced science and engineering, contributed to public service and governance, built careers in law, medicine, education, business, and humanitarian work, and strengthened communities across the country.
The College’s influence is measured not only in the accomplishments of individual graduates but in the cumulative contribution of generations who have carried forward the values of Truth, Duty, Valour. From the parade square to command appointments, from laboratories and classrooms to boardrooms, legislatures, diplomatic tables, and community organizations, RMC alumni have helped shape the national story through leadership rooted in service.
RMC’s sesquicentennial is also a reminder of the College’s continuing evolution. Today’s RMC reflects a modern Canada, bilingual, diverse, and increasingly inclusive, while remaining grounded in the traditions that have defined its character for 150 years. Its mission continues to prepare leaders for an uncertain and complex world, where courage must be matched by judgment, service by humility, and professional excellence by integrity.
For alumni, faculty, staff, cadets, families, and friends of the Royal Military Colleges, this anniversary is deeply meaningful. It honours those who came before—the Old Eighteen and the many thousands who followed—and it looks ahead to the generations who will continue to serve Canada in uniform and beyond. The legacy of RMC is not confined to its historic buildings or its storied grounds; it lives in the conduct, commitment, and contribution of its graduates.
As we mark 150 years of the Royal Military College of Canada, we celebrate more than an institution. We celebrate the national legacy of leadership, learning, sacrifice, and service. We celebrate the enduring promise of Truth, Duty, Valour, and the countless ways RMC graduates have helped make Canada stronger.
