Chris Theal, RRMC Class of 1992, has taken an interesting path since his time at Royal Roads. From the Navy to finance and energy, and now into the world of plant-based food innovation.
Chris is the Founder, President and CEO of Phytokana Ingredients Inc., an Alberta-based company focused on plant-based protein and sustainable food production. His career has moved through several very different worlds: military service, capital markets, energy leadership, governance, and now agri-food. Through it all, he has shown a willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges.
Chris graduated from Royal Roads Military College with a degree in Economics and began his career as an officer in the Royal Canadian Navy. That early experience gave him a strong foundation in responsibility, decision-making, and service. He later earned an MBA in Finance from the University of British Columbia, became a Chartered Financial Analyst, and completed the Directors Education Program, earning the ICD.D designation.
After leaving the Navy, Chris built a career in Calgary’s energy and capital markets sectors. He held senior roles including Head of Energy Research at Tristone Capital, President and CEO of Kootenay Capital Management Corp., and Chief Financial Officer of Velvet Energy Ltd. In those roles, he worked at the intersection of people, capital, strategy, and execution.
His current work with Phytokana is also personal. After a serious head injury and a long recovery, Chris adopted an anti-inflammatory diet and became more interested in the connection between food, health, and plant-based protein. That experience helped lead him to create Phytokana Ingredients Inc., where he is now building a plant protein innovation hub in Strathmore, Alberta.
Phytokana is developing Alberta’s first commercial-scale dry fractionation facility. The facility is designed to process faba beans into protein concentrates, high-protein flours, and other products for the food and beverage industry. The goal is straightforward: create more value here in Canada, support local growers, and help meet growing demand for plant-based ingredients.
In May 2026, Phytokana announced an important milestone. The company signed long-term offtake agreements with domestic and international customers representing about $450 million in contracted revenues. When combined with additional memorandums of understanding, total potential sales could exceed $500 million. These agreements help support the planned commercialization of the company’s 30,000 metric tonne per year facility in Strathmore.
For Chris, this is not just about business growth. It is about building stronger food supply chains, creating new opportunities for Alberta producers, and contributing to healthier and more sustainable food options. His background in finance, energy, governance, and military service all come together in this work.
Chris has also stayed connected to the CMC community, including through his service as President of the Royal Military Colleges of Canada Foundation. His story shows how the values shaped at the Colleges can carry into many different parts of life and work.
From Royal Roads to the Royal Canadian Navy, from energy and finance to plant-based food innovation, Chris Theal’s path has not been linear and that is what makes it interesting. It is a story of resilience, curiosity, reinvention, and finding new ways to contribute.
