Alex Ruff, RMC Class of 1997, has spent his career serving Canada in more than one way. First in uniform, and now as a Member of Parliament, his path has been shaped by a steady commitment to leadership, service, and getting the job done.
His time at the Royal Military College of Canada helped set that foundation. Like so many graduates, Alex left RMC with more than an education. He left with a sense of responsibility, a strong work ethic, and a clear understanding that leadership is about people, purpose, and service.
After graduating, Alex was commissioned into the Canadian Army and built a long career as an infantry officer. He served in a range of command and staff roles, including operational deployments overseas. Those experiences tested his judgment, his ability to lead under pressure, and his commitment to the soldiers he served alongside and led.
As his career progressed, Alex took on greater responsibility and continued to focus on the things that matter most in leadership: building strong teams, supporting junior leaders, and making clear decisions in difficult situations. His command experience, including at the battalion level, gave him a front-row view of what it takes to prepare people and organizations for demanding work.
Throughout his military career, the values he learned at RMC stayed with him. Truth, Duty, Valour were not just words from his time at the College. They became part of how he approached leadership, service, and responsibility.
After retiring from the Canadian Armed Forces, Alex chose to continue serving in a different way. He was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bruce–Grey–Owen Sound, bringing with him years of military experience and a practical understanding of leadership, defence, and public service.
The move from the Army to Parliament was a new chapter, but not a complete change in direction. In both roles, the work has been about listening, making decisions, supporting people, and taking responsibility for the outcomes. In Parliament, Alex continues to represent his constituents and contribute to national conversations on defence, veterans, and issues that affect communities across Canada.
What stands out in Alex’s story is the consistency of his service. Whether leading soldiers or serving constituents, he has stayed focused on doing the work, staying accountable, and contributing where he can make a difference.
Alex Ruff’s career is a strong example of where a CMC education can lead. The leadership developed at the Colleges does not end at graduation. It carries forward into military service, public life, community work, and many other forms of service.
From RMC to the Canadian Army, and now to Parliament Hill, Alex has continued to serve Canada in meaningful ways. His story is one of commitment, steady leadership, and a willingness to keep serving wherever he is needed.
